Alonso surprised by McLaren dominance

Fernando Alonso celebrated his second win of the season for McLaren, admitting he was surprised by his team's dominant form around the streets of Monte Carlo

The world champion gave McLaren their 150th Grand Prix win after leading from the start of the race, with only teammate Lewis Hamilton challenging his position.

The Spaniard finished over a minute ahead of third-placed Felipe Massa in the Ferrari, the Brazilian the only driver on the same lap as the McLaren duo.

The double world champion admitted he was surprised to see how dominant McLaren were.

"It has been a fantastic weekend no doubt and to score this hat trick: pole, fastest lap and race win is something very special and even more so at Monaco," the Spaniard said.

"I enjoyed today's race with the perfect car all through the race. It was so good to drive.

"I think it has been a nice surprise to see how the team was performing this weekend," added Alonso. "I have 16 or 17 wins in my career and I never won by more than one minute to the third guy.

"This is probably the easiest victory so far."

Alonso's second victory of the season took him back to the top of the championship standings on race wins but level on 38 points with rookie Hamilton.

The Briton pushed Alonso hard and, helped by traffic, managed to close the gap to his teammate to finish just four seconds behind.

Alonso added: "Especially in the first stint I had less graining than the other cars and was able to open a gap and, approaching my first stop, I caught Trulli and I was three laps behind him and two seconds slower.

"It was unbelievable. I was nine seconds ahead and then three seconds. I had problems in key moments of race."
