Glock laments Toyota qualifying issues

Timo Glock says his Toyota team must get on top of its qualifying problems in order to fight closer to the top of the field

The German driver finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in sixth position despite having started from 14th after struggling to get his tyres working in qualifying.

Glock said he knew he had the race pace to be in the points, but he is aware that Toyota needs to solve its qualifying issues.

"Today, again after three laps I knew we had the pace to get points and this is a picture through all the races that we've had," Glock told the BBC. "I started four times from the pitlane this year already and came up in the top ten, scored points.

"We are just a bit too inconsistent in qualifying and when it comes up to the race, the speed comes up, the car gets quicker and quicker from lap to lap and we just have to understand why it is not quick enough in qualifying. We handle quite well the tyres, but not good enough in qualifying."

When asked what is lacking in qualifying, he said: "Just overall grip. Sometimes it is from set to set [of tyres] different. I mean, Saturday morning in free practice I had a 30 minutes break because of the hydraulics problem, put on a new set of tyres and was quick straight on.

"Then in qualifying, the grip was not there anymore and we just polished the car, that's it. The track temperature came up five degrees and the speed was just not there."

The Toyota driver said the race has been "easy" and admitted he had enjoyed the day.

"I have to say, really easy," he said. "I remember last year I was completely exhausted of the stomach problems that I had and today, I mean the car went quicker and quicker from lap to lap.

"Really nice to drive and at the end I was pushing as hard as possible and for me it would have been easy to do another 10, 15 laps. I enjoyed quite a lot today."
