Grapevine: ITV wins award for Canada coverage
British television broadcaster ITV has won a prestigious BAFTA Award in the Sport category for the second consecutive year, thanks to its coverage of last year's Canadian Grand Prix
ITV's broadcasting of Lewis Hamilton's maiden Formula One victory was given the nod over other nominated events from 2007 - the Oxford v Cambridge boat race, the Wimbledon Men's Final and the Rugby World Cup semi-final between England and France.
The BAFTA Award is the latest in a string of trophies that ITV have taken for their coverage of F1, which included three Best Sports Programme trophies at the Royal Television Society Awards.
ITV commentator James Allen said that the award showed that the decision by Bernie Ecclestone to switch Britain's F1 coverage to BBC next year was not because of any concerns about the current coverage being below par.
"By any standards this is quite a significant vote of confidence in the ITV coverage of F1, sets a high bar for the BBC next year and shows that whatever motivated the switch to BBC, it was not the lack of quality in the coverage," said Allen.
