Alonso takes emotional home win in Spain
World Champion Fernando Alonso brought an adoring home crowd to their feet after taking a dominant win in the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time
The 24-year-old led virtually from start to finish in his Renault as he beat German Michael Schumacher by 18.5 seconds to take the 11th win of his career and the first for a Spaniard on home soil.
By winning, he also increased his lead in the drivers' championship to 15 points over Ferrari driver Schumacher.
Behind Schumacher, Alonso's Italian teammate Giancarlo Fisichella completed the podium after taking a trip across the turn three gravel mid-way through the race, holding off Ferrari's Felipe Massa.
Finn Kimi Raikkonen leapt from ninth to fifth at the start and held the position through to the end in his McLaren, beating Honda pair Jenson Button and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.
German Nick Heidfeld completed the points in his BMW Sauber.
His countryman Ralf Schumacher broke his front wing during a failed attempt to pass his Italian Toyota teammate Jarno Trulli on lap 16.
He was forced to pit for a replacement, but additional damage caused his retirement later on.
McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya also retired when he spun exiting turn two on lap 18 and beached his car on the kerbs on the inside of turn three.
