Renault Target Titles, Not Wins

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso continues to be the main favourite to clinch the drivers' title despite having been beaten by McLaren rival Kimi Raikkonen in the last two events.

The Finn and his team have looked faster than Renault and Alonso as of late, Raikkonen's commanding win from pole position in Turkey being his fifth success of the season. Alonso, however, is still 24 points ahead of his rival with five races remaining.

Renault, meanwhile, are only nine points ahead of McLaren in the constructors' standings.

Briatore reckons it will not be easy for Renault to win again given McLaren's impressive form, but the Italian believes the French squad can still clinch both titles on consistency.

"I think it is difficult to win because McLaren are very competitive but if it is not possible to win then we must do the best possible and this is a good result for the team, second and fourth," said Briatore.

"Fernando is still 24 points ahead of Raikkonen in the Championship and we are not fighting for wins, we are fighting for the Championship.

"We have five races to go, we go to Monza, which will be a better circuit for us for sure, we go to Brazil, where we will have a big step in the car, and I mean we are not concerned about the situation at the moment."

Renault started the season strongly, winning the first four races, but the competitive edge has now been shifted to McLaren, with the French team looking unable to keep with the development rate of their rivals.

Briatore, however, played down McLaren's momentum, saying all points are worth the same.

"What difference is it early or end? Ten points is ten points, there is no difference. If you make it early, if you score in the first second or you score in 90 minutes, it makes no difference, it is important to make points.

"For the moment, Fernando has more wins and we will see about it at the next race," said Briatore. "We look race by race, we are still 24 points in front and that is what I know. McLaren are very strong.

"We had a very strong start to the season, McLaren has a second part stronger but points are points and we are still in front."
