Montoya Laments Losing Second
A disappointed Juan Pablo Montoya said he was cruising in the closing stages of the Turkish Grand Prix before the two-incidents that cost him second place to Fernando Alonso
The Colombian was punted into a spin by backmarker Tiago Monteiro two laps from home before running wide at Turn Eight on the penultimate lap to hand second place to McLaren's main title rival.
Speaking about the incidents afterwards, Montoya could not but help draw comparisons to the incident with Jos Verstappen at the 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix, when he was spun out of the lead of the race.
"It is a bit disappointing," admitted Montoya. "I thought I was looking good for today but at the beginning of the race I had too much graining. When it cleared up the car was quite quick.
"I was cruising at the end and when I went to pass Monteiro he did what Jos Verstappen did to me a few years ago. After I got going again the first few corners were okay but at Turn Eight I had no rear grip.
"Monteiro just hit me and broke the diffuser - so I lost all the downforce of the car. It was a shame because I was looking good for the Constructors' Championship, although I still managed to score some good points."
