Williams points finger at FW26

Frank Williams says the team's poor performances in 2004 are down to the recalcitrant FW26 rather than the responsibility of its drivers

The team has failed to take a victory since Juan Pablo Montoya's win at the German Grand Prix last year. The team's best position this year was the Colombian's second place at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Since then Montoya has taken just one more podium, at the San Marino Grand Prix, while team-mate Ralf Schumacher has come home no higher than fourth.

After the German's accident, reserve driver Marc Gene failed to make an impression and now test driver Antonio Pizzonia has steeped into the breach, who also failed to set the world alight at Hockenheim.

"It's very simple: in order to win you need a car in which you can win in," Williams said. "Our goal has to be to supply a car that is in a position to do so. The best driver in the world can only win when he has a car capable of doing so."

While Williams acknowledges the FW26 is quicker than last year's model, he said it was not enough of step forward given the improvements made by its rivals.

"The WilliamsF1 BMW FW26 is faster than its predecessor, but Ferrari, B.A.R., Renault and McLaren Mercedes have also improved," he said.
