GPs a turn-off, says Mansell
Former world champion Nigel Mansell has attacked the interest level in Formula 1, saying that he can't bear to sit through an entire grand prix because of the lack of action
Six-time champion Michael Schumacher won his ninth race from 10 starts at Magny-Cours in France at the weekend, and Mansell has admitted that the lack of on-track action bores him.
"I've tried to defend it because it meant such a lot to me for so many years," Mansell told The Times on Monday. "But even I can no longer go on defending the indefensible. How can you when there is virtually no overtaking on the track and little genuine excitement? I'll usually sit down to watch the start of a grand prix but after a few laps I find I can't watch any more and switch off. It's that bad.
"Even a couple of team owners have told me Formula One is in a mess and they hate it. They don't enjoy going to grands prix any more."
Mansell will return to the cockpit of an F1 car in London's Regent Street tomorrow when he drives a Jordan in the Formula 1 Parade.
