Firman targets US switch
Former Jordan Grand Prix driver Ralph Firman has set his sights on a switch to the Champ Car or IRL IndyCar series in the United States following the loss of his place on the Formula 1 grid
The 28-year-old Briton, who lost his seat to Italy's Giorgio Pantano on Friday, has also shown an interest in the German-based DTM touring car series, although all the seats are taken for 2004. Another option could be to return to Japan, where he won the Formula Nippon title in 2002.
"I am concentrating my efforts on a new category of racing," said Firman. "While my first choice would be to race in a highly competitive single-seater series such as Champ Car or IRL in America, I am also fascinated to race in DTM because of the sophistication of the cars.
"Jordan's announcement is a set-back, but I have been aware of the position for some time and as a professional racing driver you endure ups and downs from time to time. Just over a year ago I was celebrating having been signed by Eddie, and I am only really disappointed that the difficulties with last year's Jordan car made it impossible to do anything significant in my rookie season.
"I wish the team well and hope to work with them in the future - they are a talented group. I've also enjoyed working with Ford, a really impressive company, and if I move to Champ Car look forward to linking with them again."
