Fisi impresses at Valencia

The new Sauber C23 began to display some serious pace in the hands of Giancarlo Fisichella today. The team's new lead driver lapped Valencia just half a second off the lap record on the team's first serious day of work.

"This is the best day of my life," said Fisichella. "It's a great feeling and we did a good lap time, which was my target.

"We began to do some setup work today and we got a good response. This has been my best-ever shakedown. So far so good."

Fisichella completed 80 laps today with a best of 1m10.513s. The best recorded lap at the track is David Coulthard's 1m10.021s effort in the new McLaren last November.

The only problem encountered was a minor hydraulics issue, and a filming session with Felipe Massa driving last year's car ate into the team's time for effective work, preventing them for doing their planned longer runs.

Massa will be the only one working at the track tomorrow, as he gets his first taste of the new car.
