Webber delighted but Wilson is frustrated
First qualifying at Monza for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix caused mixed emotions in the Jaguar Racing camp, as Mark Webber overcame its straightline speed deficit to set the sixth fastest time but Justin Wilson bemoaned problems that limited him to a lowly 15th
Webber was clocked by the speed trap at 337kph, some 18kph down on the pacesetting Toyota of Cristiano da Matta. Despite this, he set an identical lap time to McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, who was 10kph faster at the end of the start/finish straight.
"I am surprised at having secured sixth place today," said Webber. "The one-lap pace is something we are usually very strong at, but we have a fair deal of work ahead of us if we are to remain competitive over a race distance."
Wilson's day got off to a bad start with gearbox and engine problems in the private test and free practice respectively.
"A frustrating day that hasn't ended too well for me," he admitted. "I didn't get any low fuel runs prior to qualifying. This hindered me considerably, especially when it comes to understanding the limit of the car and tyres. Nonetheless, Friday qualifying means little and there is still ample time in which to make a difference this weekend."
