Pizzonia beats Webber in qualifying
Jaguar Racing went out to bat this afternoon with 'issues' pending. Although there was no reappearance of the gearbox gremlin that blighted Pizzonia's running in practice this morning, a chassis problem meant that his qualifying run had to be conducted in the T-car, which was at least set up for him. Pizzonia starts from 10th with mark Webber in 11th - ahead of David Coulthard, no less
"We suffered a problem on the chassis of my race car prior to qualifying warm-up session and I had no choice but to switch to the T-car," said Pizzonia. "We have an optimum race strategy for tomorrow, given the fuel and tyre combination we have opted for, and I am reasonably happy with the balance of the car."
The Brazilian can feel justified in feeling 'reasonably happy' with his performance, given that team-mate Webber leads him in the qualifying stats for the season with a score of eight to two. Webber, on the other hand, made two small mistakes in Becketts without which he may well have found the tenth of a second he needed to leapfrog both Pizzonia and Jacques Villeneuve.
"Not the best lap I have done around this circuit but you can't win them all," said the Australian. "I not in the habit of making excuses and I certainly don't want to start now. Suffice to say that it could have been better but there is still a long race ahead of us tomorrow.
"It's not a conventional grid order for tomorrow's race and it will be very interesting to see how the strategies come into play...I know there are thousands of Jaguar fans here this weekend and we'll just have to see what we can pull out of the bag tomorrow."
