Jerez day 3: Toyota outpaces Ferrari
Olivier Panis set the pace for Toyota on the third day of testing at Jerez in Spain, where the unseasonably bad weather finally cleared to allow some dry weather running today (Thursday)
Despite the Frenchman downplaying the speed of the Toyota this week, he lapped half a second clear of Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer. The Italian was, in turn, half a second quicker in the 2003-GA this afternoon than the time he set in the F2002 in the morning.
David Coulthard was the quickest of the McLaren-Mercedes duo, beating team-mate Kimi Raikkonen by 0.7secs. Ralf Schumacher was slowest in the 2003 Williams, but concentrated on long runs today.
Ferrari's other test driver, Felipe Massa, continued to test at Fiorano today, completing 70 laps of the Ferrari-owned test track in an F2002. His best time was a very impressive 57.378s - the fastest ever lap of the circuit by the 2002-spec machine.
Allan McNish completed 104 laps of the Silverstone National Circuit in an updated 2002-spec Renault. His best time was 42.560s.
