Alesi laps new-look Hockenheim
Hockenheim's new 4.574-kilometre layout, which will be used for the first time at the German Grand Prix later this month, has been christened by Mercedes-Benz's DTM star Jean Alesi
Due to the shortening of the track the number of laps for the event has been increased from 45 to 67, and the new part of the circuit features a hairpin that has been designed with overtaking in mind. Alesi got a sneak preview of the layout in advance of the event, which takes place on July 28.
"This is a masterpiece of a racetrack, which I am sure both drivers and spectators will enjoy," said Alesi. "The new part of the track offers everything a Formula 1 car needs for passing manoeuvres. First they approach the corner with more than 300kph, then they have to slow down to about 80kph.
"The corner is wide enough to allow different lines. I expect an exciting German Grand Prix," he added.
The new section of track also sports a futuristically styled new grandstand, with a capacity of 6,500 seats. The circuit now boasts a maximum attendance of 120,000 spectators.
