Yoong takes second in Monaco
Minardi Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong came within a lap of claiming victory in the third Historic Grand Prix of Monaco on Sunday, but he had to settle for second place after a gearbox problem slowed his ex-Ronnie Peterson Lotus 72, costing him the lead on the last lap
Yoong, who qualified third, made a great start to lead early on, but when his car became stuck in fifth gear he was powerless as Martin Stretton swept by in his six-wheel Tyrrell P34 to take the chequered flag. Christopher Perkins was third in a Surtees TS16.
"It had been a fantastic weekend for me," said Yoong. "I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I had the chance to soak in all the fantastic atmosphere. The two days had gone well as I managed to put in 15 laps in the wet yesterday and 10 race laps in the dry today. The experience will certainly come to good use next week. I like to thank the team for giving me the chance for the ride. They had been terrific."
