Schumacher: Sportsman of the Year
Just two days after his controversial victory in the Austrian GP, reigning Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher has been name Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. The German edged out other sporting icons, including Tiger Woods and previous winner Lance Armstrong, to claim the prestigious honour, which was awarded at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco last night (Tuesday)
Schumacher's closest challenger in this year's title race, Juan Pablo Montoya, was also a recipient of an award. The Colombian was named Laureus Newcomer of the Year for his exploits in 2001, which saw him take three pole positions and one win in his rookie season.
Other winners included tennis ace Jennifer Capriati (Sportswomen of the year), the Australian cricket team (Team of the Year) and Wimbledon champion Goran Invanisevic (Comeback of the year).
Sir Peter Blake, the New Zealand yatching legend who was tragically murdered by pirates in the Amazon last year, received two posthumous awards: Lifetime Achievement and Sport for Good.
Laureus World Sports Awards winners are chosen by a selection panel consisting of over 300 leading sports journalists from more than 75 countries.
