Williams to follow Ferrari 'box trend
According to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine, Williams-BMW is to radically redesign its FW24 and follow the design lead set by Ferrari's innovative, ultra-compact transmission system in a bid to close the gap on its rival
The team is thought to have commissioned German specialists Hörs Technologies to create the new transmission, and hopes that it will be ready by mid season at the latest.
Ferrari has stolen a march on the opposition by creating a gearbox incorporating the smallest components possible. This has allowed quicker gearchanges and has made the unit a more integrated part of the engine and chassis.
But BMW Motorsport boss Gerhard Berger thinks that the team cannot get on terms with the championship leaders by focussing purely on one area of the package.
"It is not one area we need to improve it is everywhere," he said. "The engine, gearbox, aerodynamics and tyres."
Williams is also believed to be considering a twin-keel front suspension layout.
