Jaguar drivers question tyre rule
Jaguar drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Eddie Irvine criticised the tyre allocation restrictions after free practice in San Marino today (Friday). The rules state that each driver is allowed seven sets of wet tyres for the whole weekend, and both drivers felt this to be too inflexible in a situation where the whole grand prix weekend could be wet
"In horrendous weather conditions like this, it highlights the need to re-address the regulations on the number of sets we are permitted to use," reasoned Pedro de la Rosa. "If the whole weekend proves to be wet, we will not have enough wet tyres to get through our job list before race day. The grooved tyre regulation of having three sets available on a Friday should be applied to wets."
Team-mate Irvine agreed and feels the team will suffer as a result of not getting in as much track time as it would like.
"We have nothing new on the car for this weekend and I think we'll probably struggle in this race if the weather stays like this," he admitted.
Irvine ended the day as the quicker of the two in 13th place. De la Rosa was three tenths slower than the Ulsterman and was back in 16th.
