Silverstone, day 3: Gene still fastest
It was another successful day's work for Williams on the final day of testing at a sunny Silverstone today (Thursday) with Marc Gene heading the timesheets for the third time in a row
The Spaniard set his quickest time yet - 1m23.115 - as he completed 78 laps of the Northamptonshire track in an interim car. The team spent the morning working on Michelin's new tyres, which they hope to run in Malaysia, while the afternoon was dedicated to trying out new engine components.
Fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso was second fastest, over a second and a half slower than his countryman. Once again he drove a 2001-spec Benetton, setting a best time of 1m24.755s as he tested 2002 electrics.
Anthony Davidson completed the runners. The BAR tester did the fewest laps (20), running an old engine that had a limited amount of mileage left in it. He was driving a 2001 car and concentrated on aerodynamic work. His best time was 1m26.425s, and he'll continue working at the Santa Pod drag strip tomorrow.
Ferrari continued testing for the third consecutive day at Fiorano and Mugello. Once again tester Luciano Burti was carrying out Bridgestone tyre work at Fiorano, completing 136 laps in an F2001. his best time was 59.591s. He will continue running tomorrow.
Luca Badoer drove the F2002 at Mugello, managing 100 laps and a best time of 1m23.261s.
