BAR launch: Fukuda joins test team
British American Racing has confirmed that French Formula 3 champion Ryo Fukuda has signed as its fourth test driver for 2002
Fukuda had been expected to join Toyota as its test driver, but the 22-year-old Japanese has been snapped up by the Brackley-based team instead. BAR has also retained the services of 2001 test drivers Anthony Davidson, Darren Manning and Patrick Lemarie.
Fukuda dominated the French F3 Championship with seven race victories impressing the team with his bold driving style and flamboyant character. He is a tailor-made replacement for Takuma Sato, whom BAR lost to Jordan for 2002.
"Fukuda is a big talent and we have had our eye on him for some time," said engineering director Malcolm Oastler. "I am pleased to have him on board and believe he can play a significant role in our major development push next season and beyond. We are committed to helping young, aggressive drivers progress and at the same time we benefit from a good mix of youth an experience within the team."
Fukuda said: "I am very happy to work with Lucky Strike BAR-Honda. I am honoured to receive their confidence and will do my best for them in 2002."
