Alonso impressive in updated Minardi
Fernando Alonso matched his best qualifying position of the season with 18th on the grid for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix as his Minardi team desperately goes in search of its first championship points
Alonso's talent shone through on the tight and twisting Hungaroring track and the young Spaniard starts 18th for the fifth time this season, helped by the aerodynamic developments of the PS01B.
The European Minardi ace outgunned the Arrows of both Enrique Bernoldi and and Hjos Verstappen as well as Luciano Burti's Jaguar.
"Today I really felt competitive with my car," said Alonso. "Everything went very well, the new gearbox and the revised aerodynamic package are helping the car to perform much better. Now we are in a position to fight our rivals more effectively and to try to improve our grid positions.
"I lost maybe a tenth of a second on my last run, but I gave the maximum I could. Perhaps I could have improved just a little bit, but frankly, I believe I pushed to the limit this afternoon."
