Kimi: Ferrari not my only goal

Sauber's wunderkind Kimi Raikkonen has rubbished rumours that he will land Michael Schumacher's seat at Ferrari when the world champion retires

Raikkonen has been linked to a drive with the Prancing Horse due to Sauber's customer Ferrari engine deal. But the young Finn, in an exclusive interview in this week's Autosport magazine, insists that his heart is not set on a move to the Maranello outfit - instead he wants a drive in the best seat possible, wherever that might be.

"It is nice to hear from people about the Ferrari stories, but I don't really follow that," said Raikkonen, who has been one of the revelations of the 2001 season. "I would just be happy if I got in one of the top teams, and I don't really mind which it is. I guess it doesn't matter if it is McLaren, Williams or Ferrari.

"You never know if Ferrari are going to go down the order, or who is going to come up and who will win," he added. "I don't read this speculation, and I think people are saying too much. But this happens in F1. Everyone gets a bit mad."

Raikkonen also denied that he has had lengthy discussions with Ferrari sporting director Jean Todt. The Frenchman had expressed interest in the Sauber driver as a contender for a future place at Ferrari, but Raikkonen says he has only briefly talked to the Ferrari supremo.

"I have only met him (Todt) once at the begining of the year when we had a test with Sauber at Fiorano," confirmed Raikkonen. "The only people I speak to from Ferrari are the engine guys, because of Sauber's deal with them."

Raikkonen heads to the Hungaroring this weekend to race on yet another track that is new to him. But, as he has shown so far this season, previous experience of the circuit is not a prerequisite for him to do well.

"I haven't been to Hungary before, but as usual I don't expect any problems learning the track," he said. "From what my engineers tell me it is like Monaco without the close barriers, and after a strong race in Monte Carlo I'm looking forward to another one at the Hungaroring."
