Jaguar hopes podium finish is no flash in the pan
Eddie Irvine gave Jaguar its maiden top three finish at Monaco on Sunday, the Ulsterman returning to the podium for the first time since he lost the world title in Japan in the final race of 1999
The result provided a massive boost for the Big Cat, whose cars featured new aerodynamics for the Monte Carlo race - the area that Irvine had previously criticised the team for lagging behind in.
"It is fantastic to be on the podium - especially here at Monaco," said Irvine. "Two Ferraris and a Jaguar on the podium is what Formula One is about in a way. Let's hope we can carry this into the next race in Canada as well."
Irvine finished fourth last year, Jaguar's only significant result of a difficult debut season after the marque took over the Stewart Grand Prix squad. This season had looked little better, until now.
"This has been a long time coming, I guess," said team boss Bobby Rahal. "I'm very proud of the team, they did a super job. I hope it's the start of more good things.
"I anticipate more changes to the car as the season progresses. This result is going to whet our appetite, for sure."
