Sergio Perez says Mexican GP will not drop off F1 calendar again
Sergio Perez is certain that the Mexican Grand Prix will not slip off the Formula 1 calendar for a second year running, following the announcement of a race for 2015
Race promoters announced a new deal for Mexico to rejoin the schedule next season after a 23-year absence.
But although it featured on the provisional 2014 schedule before dropping off, Perez believes the situation is very different this time around.
"I am 100 per cent sure that we will go to Mexico next year," said Perez, speaking a day after the new Mexican GP deal was announced. "I have no doubt about that.
"Everything was confirmed last year, but it was a very difficult situation due to the time we had to build the circuit.
"But now there is no doubt. We all can think that we are going there, and already they are building the circuit.
"They are starting to work on the circuit, so we are definitely going there."
F1 SET FOR A SURPRISE
While Perez is looking forward to the opportunity to race in Mexico for the first time in his career, he also thinks F1 itself will be in for a surprise.
"I was unlucky to not be in a race in Mexico, and I think it will be quite different [to last time]," he said.
"I am really enthusiastic and I am sure you will be surprised about how good we will do the events.
"It is great. I am so happy. Since I left my home 13-14 years ago I never raced in Mexico, so to go back and race in F1 will be great.
"It is great for my country. They have been really pushing for so many years since I came to F1.
"The spirit of the fans is massive back home so it is great for my country and my fans - and you will all be surprised with how the event will be."
However, Perez has warned drivers and fans not to get too excited about the potential return of the famous Peraltada corner - which may not survive the track revamp.
"I don't know if they will keep Peraltada," he explained. "I suspect they will already do some changes. It is an historic corner.
"I have been talking [to people] in the paddock and they all tell me, 'we will have Peraltada again!'.
"But we don't know if they will have it because I think we will change the layout of the circuit."
