F1 Miami GP Live Commentary and Updates – Sprint race & Qualifying

Saturday's action from the sixth round of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

F1 runs its second sprint race event of the season, with Max Verstappen taking pole during Friday’s sprint race qualifying ahead of Charles LeclercLando Norris led the opening two segments of sprint race qualifying but faded to ninth in SQ3.

The Miami GP sprint race starts at 5pm BST (12pm local time) followed by grand prix qualifying at 9pm BST (4pm local time).

Piastri is sixth ahead of Hulkenberg in seventh and Hamilton takes the final points place off Tsunoda with a final-lap overtake.
Ricciardo holds off Sainz to take fourth! What a drive by the Australian!
Verstappen wins the Miami GP sprint race! He takes it by 3.3s from Leclerc with Perez in third.
Alonso has pitted on the start of the final lap so that's his race run.
Verstappen is inching away from Leclerc in the lead with the gap up to 2.5s.
Ricciardo has put in a mega sprint so far, still holding off Sainz for fourth. Two laps to go.
Magnussen gets another 10s penalty for his off-track moment defending from Hamilton at Turn 11. That's 20s now.
Verstappen has stabilised his lead at 2s ovr Leclerc, with Perez third and Ricciardo still defending from Sainz for fourth.
Hamilton has finally got ahead of Magnussen and is now attacking Tsunoda for eighth place.
Magnussen goes off again defending from Hamilton at Turn 11 and that allows Tsunoda to dive in front of Hamilton to take ninth!
Magnussen has been shown the black and white flag for track limits, meaning if he goes off again he will get another penalty.

Verstappen's lead is dropping - down to 1.8s - so can Leclerc launch a late attack?
Ricciardo is still fending off Sainz for fourth, as is Magnussen for eighth against Hamilton despite his incoming penalty.
Hamilton has now been noted for speeding in the pitlane, it is all happening!
Magnussen has been given a 10s penalty for cutting the chicane and is now under investigation for going off at Turn 11 while battling Hamilton.
Hamilton, with DRS, goes around the outside of Magnussen and then tries the switch back but Magnussen blocks him off and it appears they make contact!
Verstappen is asked for a balance update: "Terrible, zero rear grip, like quali," is the reply. The Red Bull driver isn't pulling away from Leclerc with the gap still 2.2s
Norris will be investigated after the sprint race for walking across the live track. The stewards have noted Magnussen's off-track moment at the chicane.
10 laps to go and Verstappen leads by 2.2s from Leclerc. Further back, Ricciardo has fallen out of DRS range of Perez.
Hamilton looks for a move around the outside of Magnussen into Turn 11 but is shown the edge of the track, and then the Dane cuts the chicane at Turns 14-15.
Further back Hamilton is tucked up behind both Haas cars who are playing the team game with DRS. Hamilton complains about being "too slow on the straights".
It would appear Perez is towing along Ricciardo as he keeps the Australian within the one-second mark. That means Verstappen and Leclerc are clearing off out front.
Norris has been noted for walking across the track after his Turn 1 off.
Is Perez keeping Ricciardo in his DRS in order to defend from Sainz and Piastri?
Ricciardo uses DRS from Perez to defend from Sainz on the straight/finish straight to keep hold of fourth at the start of lap six.
Verstappen is duly over one second ahead of Leclerc as DRS is enabled. Ricciardo comes under attack from Perez at Turn 11 and the Red Bull driver dives up the inside to take third.
All well behaved at the restart with no early movers. Verstappen is trying to clear Leclerc by a second to avoid being attacked with DRS which is available on the next lap.
Verstappen bolts coming out of Turn 17 to nail his restart and clear Leclerc.
The safety car is coming in at the end of lap three. Verstappen leads from Leclerc, Ricciardo, Perez, Sainz, Piastri, Hulkenberg and Magnussen who hold the points positions for the restart.
The FIA stewards have already decided to take no further action on that Turn 1 incident.
Stroll is also out of the race with damage - meanwhile Ocon has served his 10-second penalty during this safety car period.
Replays of the start reveal what happened to Norris. The McLaren driver got a good getaway and attempted to dive around the outside, but at the same time Hamilton did the same up the inside. That sandwiches both Astons and it pushes them all into Norris who gets pinged off.
Alonso has a puncture and is down in 18th, with Aston Martin team-mate Stroll down in 19th.
Norris is out with damage after contact in an incident involving Alonso and Hamilton. The safety car has been deployed.
Verstappen chops in front of Leclerc to retain the lead, but further back Norris is fired off at Turn 1 and that brings out the yellow flags.
The Red Bull driver takes his place on pole position and the rest line up behind him. Here we go...
Verstappen controls the pace of the pack on the formation lap, minus Albon who waits in pitlane, and backs off to bunch everyone up coming through Turn 17.
The tyre blankets are taken off and reveal Verstappen is on used mediums and Leclerc is on fresh mediums. On row two, Perez is on used mediums and Ricciardo is on fresh mediums. That could mean a spicy fight into Turn 1.
