Sainz is told "we think the car is okay" by Ferrari. He presses on, hoping to make his fresher tyres pay against Leclerc, but is 3.6s behind as it stands.
It appears Verstappen isn't biding his time or playing the long game. He really doesn't seem to have an answer for Norris, who has gapped him to the tune of 3.4s.
Hamilton fancies a pop at taking fifth from Perez. "If you got any power, give it to me," he implores the Mercedes pitwall.
That has left Ocon in ninth and, even if Alonso does fight his way past, he will still be in a points place.
No, it turns out. "Something is wrong with the car, check the downforce," Sainz radios in.
Replays show the back-end stepped out on Sainz under braking as he made his move on Piastri, his right-rear corner clipping Piastri's front left and deranging the front wing. Will the Ferrari driver escape unscathed?
Pit stop
And there was contact between Sainz and Piastri which has forced the Australian to pit. Rotten luck.
It goes from bad to worse for Piastri. Perez and Hamilton both sweep past him on the brakes into Turn 11, as he drops from fifth down to seventh in one corner.
Magnussen gets yet another penalty this weekend, this time for failing to serve his previous penalty correctly.
Sainz gets it done! He takes fourth with a late dive up the inside into Turn 17, before Piastri responds with DRS and crosses the start-finish line ahead, only to run wide into Turn 1 and into the run-off. Fourth is Sainz's, a few laps later than he would ideally have liked.
Can Verstappen find an answer to Norris's pace? The McLaren driver has stretched his lead out to 2.5s. Verstappen complains: "I can't get the car to turn, it's a disaster". Perhaps a legacy of his front wing strike from earlier?
Perez's struggles mean Hamilton is able to stick within DRS range, could that allow Mercedes a crumb of comfort from a difficult weekend?
"It's incredible," is the frustrated response when Sainz is informed he'll have to take fourth from Piastri himself. Perez behind has been unable to make the mediums work for him and remains stuck in sixth.
No further investigation is deemed necessary by the FIA, so Piastri can keep his fourth place. Sainz will no doubt be seething in his cockpit.
McLaren makes clear over the radio that it does not think Piastri should give the position back to Sainz as he was ahead at the apex. Either way, we'll find out soon...
Norris set another fastest lap last time around and has stretched his advantage over Verstappen to 1.9s. He's making those fresher tyres work for him.
Tsunoda is now playing the 'Hulkenberg' role, with Russell, Ocon and Alonso bottled up behind.
Sainz is calling on McLaren to ask Piastri to cede the position so he doesn't get a penalty. But for now the Australian has his sights set on Leclerc's third place.
It was a great move from Hamilton, around the outside of T12 and taking the inside into T13.
Ferrari isn't happy with Piastri's defence as Sainz was pretty much run out of road on the corner exit.
Hamilton has now made his way past Tsunoda and can see if he can hold onto the back of Perez.
Sainz lines up Piastri for a move into Turn 11 around the outside, but the Australian is having none of it and ushers the Ferrari driver wide. Fourth remains the McLaren driver's property for now.
In fact, that restart lap was the fastest lap of the race so far from Norris. Good going.
Hamilton is trying to get straight past Tsunoda for P7 but the Japanese driver defends well into T11.
A fantastic restart from Norris means he's broken clear of DRS range as they head down the long back straight.
Verstappen immediately goes on the attack at the restart, but Norris covers him off into Turn 1 and the Red Bull has to make sure Leclerc doesn't ambush him on the exit.
Green flag
We're set for a 24-lap sprint to the finish in Miami. Back to green we go as Norris leads Verstappen and Leclerc.
The safety car will be in this lap, we're told by race control.
The pack has now caught back up to Norris. Can he hold off Verstappen once the race goes green to secure his first F1 win?
Penalty
Magnussen has been given a 10-second penalty for the incident.
With the top five on hard tyres, Perez is the first in the crocodile on mediums after making the call to ditch his hards under the safety car without losing a place.
Unsurprisingly, the incident between Sargeant and Magnussen is under investigation.
Tsunoda's stop has allowed him to jump clear of Hamilton and into seventh. Perfect for RB.
Ocon is now in the top 10 for Alpine, which would be very welcome for them.
Ocon is now in the top 10 for Alpine, which would be very welcome for them.
The safety car had picked up Verstappen, but he wasn't the leader. That has now been remedied by race control, with the pack from second down now allowed to pass Bernd Maylander's Mercedes.
Pit stop
Norris does now pit and switches onto the hard tyres. Extending that opening stint proved just the right call and means he's now the leader over Verstappen and Leclerc.
So Sargeant was ahead at T2 and, into T3, they tangled at the apex. It looks every bit a racing incident to me.
Norris wasn't able to get to the pits before the safety car was called and goes around for another lap. Perez and Tsunoda begin the flood of pit callers - the Red Bull driver ditching his hards and switching back to mediums.
Magnussen has managed to get back going but Sargeant is out. Lots of damage at the rear of the Williams. A bitter shame.
Safety car
Safety car is out.
Yellow flag
Sargeant and Magnussen have come together. Norris has lucked in!
