But, before we get too carried away by the excitement of the sprint race later, we've got this one hour practice session to negotiate first. It's the least significant of all of this weekend's track activity, but that won't stop it from being analysed anyway.
Mercedes was not the only one making engine changes, as Charles Leclerc has also got new parts - albeit without a penalty. "As a precaution, we switched back to a previously used PU for Charles after yesterday's issues," said Ferrari, regarding Leclerc's complaints over a lack of power. "This carries no penalty."
While Bottas impressed in qualifying, his team had already elected to change a number of elements of his power unit so, regardless of where he finishes today, he will start tomorrow's grand prix at the back. And that raises some interesting team orders questions, which Mercedes boss Toto Wolff discusses here: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/mercedes-wont-employ-pre-race-team-orders-for-monza-f1-sprint/6664462/
And that also means qualifying has already taken place - not that Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas will be credited with that fastest time. Pole will instead be officially recorded as the driver who wins the sprint race.
On the off chance that you need reminding, this weekend marks the second of Formula 1's sprint race (yes, we're calling it what it actually is) experiments. And that means today there's a one-hour practice session starting at 11:00am BST, followed by the 18-lap sprint race at 3:30 this afternoon.
Ciao, and welcome to Autosport's live coverage of the Saturday of the 2021 Italian Grand Prix!
