But Gasly doesn't end the session in the top 10 as Stroll improves to take that spot off him - just over a tenth between the Aston driver in P10 and Ocon in P12 suggests it will be mighty close come qualifying for that all-important Q3 berth.
Down in the pack, the AlphaTauris have made improvements; Gasly bumping in-between the two Alpines into P10 (with Alonso also going quicker to displace his team-mate Ocon) while Tsunoda has moved up to P14.
And the replays show just where Bottas lost the time - a big understeer into the chicane followed by a lock-up as he ploughed straight over the run-off. A messy moment that will do his confidence no good at all ahead of qualifying.
Bottas's last lap was in the 1m22s, so he doesn't improve and stays third.
Sure enough, the incident between Giovinazzi and Stroll has been noted by the stewards and will be investigated after the session.
Ricciardo has moved up to P8 ahead of Ocon and Alonso, who sit on the proverbial Q3 bubble ahead of Vettel, Stroll, Gasly, Raikkonen, Russell, Latifi and Tsunoda down in P17.
Behind, Leclerc moves ahead of Norris just behind Sainz, while Perez improves but only to P7 - a difficult afternoon lies in wait for the second Red Bull driver it seems.
Improvements are coming thick and fast - Hamilton goes top on a 1m16.826s, just ahead of Verstappen on a 1m16.914s. What can Bottas do?
Oh dear, a very avoidable clash in the pitlane between Stroll and Giovinazzi as Alfa Romeo send the Italian out into the path of the Aston - Giovinazzi just doing enough to slow and minimise contact, with Stroll running over his front wing with his right-rear tyre. Expect action from the stewards on that one.
As a reminder of the order at the moment, it's Bottas from Sainz, Verstappen, Norris, Hamilton, Perez, Leclerc, Gasly, Raikkonen and Latifi making up an eclectic top 10.
Everybody who has gone out is on the soft, so expect a bit of a shakeup in the order as drivers contest their final quali sims.
Green flag
The green light is on and we're back underway for the final nine minutes of FP3.
The car has been craned behind the barrier, and Schumacher has been collected by the medical car - so we should be back underway before too long to finish the session off.
Replays show that Schumacher already had a big moment a few corners previous - the car clearly not handling to his liking on the soft tyres. As with Monaco, his participation in qualifying is now a question mark with a big rebuild job ahead for Haas.

"I'm okay," says a winded Schumacher, who gingerly extracts himself. "I'm really sorry for that, I know what it means."
Crash
It's a hefty shunt for Schumacher, who spins off backwards at the fast Turn 11 right-hander as the back end just seemed to give up on his Haas.
Red flag
With 17 minutes to go, we've got a red flag.
Undeterred, Bottas goes faster again with a 1m17.055s to pull a four-tenth advantage over the field.
Sainz also makes an improvement, slotting into second on the soft tyre with a 1m17.497s - just behind Bottas in P1. Good lap from the Ferrari man.
At last, McLaren has turned up to the party. Norris pops up in P3, with a 1m17.772s that is just three tenths shy of Bottas.

Hamilton now has ventured back out again on another set of softs. Can he close the 0.7s gap to his team-mate?
Raikkonen seems to have turned up this weekend - despite sitting out FP1 for Kubica, he easily had the beating of Giovinazzi in FP2 and has just posted the eighth-fastest time with a 1m18.976. His Italian team-mate is 10 places further back.
Looking at the sector times, it's Verstappen who still has the best first sector with Bottas sweeping sectors two and three. The optimal lap putting the three together is a 1m17.105, three tenths quicker than Bottas's best so far.
A little further down the order, we find Ricciardo down in P15 - that's uncomfortably close to the cut-off for Q1 that he'll desperately be hoping to avoid later this afternoon. Just behind him are Russell, Schumacher, Giovinazzi, Tsunoda and Mazepin.
Ocon was fourth yesterday, but only P10 currently - currently running on the medium tyre just shy of his personal best in the low 1m19s bracket.
Twitter
Gasly was a strong P6 yesterday and now moves up to fifth as the leading midfield runner with a 1m18.526s, just ahead of Leclerc who also improves to a 1m18.560s.
Leclerc has a huge slide over the exit kerb at the chicane - that won't do his mediums any good. Still, if Ken Block was watching, there may be an opening for a cameo in the next Gymkhana movie...
After his disappointing first effort, Perez jumps up to fourth on a 1m18.247s - eight tenths down on Bottas.
Twitter
It's probably fair to say we didn't expect to see Latifi in P6 at this stage of the session - granted, he's behind the two medium-shod Ferraris, but is currently fourth-fastest of those to have bolted on the soft. Good effort from the Williams driver.
Bottas now emerges for the first time in the session and retakes the top spot he held overnight with a 1m17.428s, 0.08s up on Verstappen.
Perez is down in P8 after his first run on softs, his 1m19.196s leaving him behind Norris, Ocon, Latifi, Leclerc, Sainz, Hamilton and his team-mate.
Verstappen though goes quickest, posting a 1m17.510s that is a full 0.694s faster than Hamilton's previous effort.
Leclerc slots into third, just behind his team-mate, also on the mediums with a 1m19.901s - less than a tenth adrift of Sainz.

"There's a pin on my right tyre," says Hamilton - who has a brief visit to the pits for his team to inspect.
With 20 minutes of the session down, we're starting to see a bit more activity on track now. Verstappen and Perez have both been sent out on the softs, but Bottas staying home for the time being.
Still, Sainz on mediums improves to second on a 1m18.832s, only just over two tenths away from Hamilton's slightly scruffy effort on the soft.
