Further back, it was another bad beginning for Williams: both cars hit the wall and they ended up only 17th and 18th - beating just Force India tester Nicholas Latifi and Nico Hulkenberg, who didn't even do a lap time before his Renault broke.
Times are always close in Montreal (it's a short lap), but this morning certainly looked promising: two Red Bulls sandwiching a Mercedes up front, with a Ferrari just over two tenths behind and midfield leader Fernando Alonso within 0.6s of the pace too.
Welcome back to our live coverage, with second practice in Montreal about to begin.
Classification at the end of FP1: 1 Verstappen 1m13.302s; 2 Hamilton +0.088s; 3 Ricciardo +0.216s; 4 Vettel +0.272s; 5 Bottas +0.315s; 6 Raikkonen +0.425s; 7 Alonso +0.598s; 8 Sainz +0.814s; 9 Vandoorne +1.009s; 10 Gasly +1.702s; 11 Ocon +1.769s; 12 Grosjean +1.817s; 13 Ericsson +2.084s; 14 Leclerc +2.137s; 15 Magnussen +2.277s; 16 Hartley +2.454s; 17 Sirotkin +2.466s; 18 Stroll +2.957s; 19 Latifi +3.843s; 20 Hulkenberg no time.
The chequered flag is out for the end of FP1 in Canada.
Replays show he lost the rear on entry to Turn 6 and reversed into the barrier.
Sirotkin has hit the wall now too in the second Williams.
It's been a quiet session for Vettel, who has had some set-up adjustments made on his Ferrari and now goes seventh fastest, still eight tenths off the pace.
The track is busying up again as we enter the final 10 minutes.
Only four cars (Alonso, Ocon, Hartley and Sirotkin) at the moment with just 12 minutes left of this session.
Horner says this is an "important" weekend for Red Bull's future engine decision, analysing upgrades from Renault and Honda, and that his team is in "the crux of decision making maybe just after the French Grand Prix".
Replays show Ricciardo locked up at the hairpin and ran wide, ruining his lap.
Another improvement from Ricciardo, who closes to within 0.216s of Verstappen now but stays third fastest.
Verstappen has noted something flapping on his front suspension so has headed back to the pits to have it investigated.
A better lap from Ricciardo now, who uses hypersofts to move up to third, 0.338s off team-mate Verstappen's time.
Sainz has split the McLarens (Vandoorne's is in the pits having its floor swapped) now to go fifth fastest for Renault.
A fastest third sector for Hamilton brings him back within a tenth of Verstappen in the battle at the top.
