Join us later for practice two from Sepang, as the story of the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix continues.
It was a slow burner in the beginning, but the post-session talk will again be centred around tyre durability.
Hamilton is ninth in the other Mercedes and Grosjean rounds out the top 10 for Lotus at the end of a hot and steamy session.
Massa ends the morning session in seventh spot, with di Resta showing well for Force India again - both cars in the top eight.
Vettel is third in the other Red Bull, with Alonso three-tenths back in fourth place, Rosberg fifth and Sutil in sixth for Force India.
Mark Webber is fastest in first practice for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix with a time of 1m36.935s, 0.068s clear of Kimi Raikkonen.
Raikkonen ends his 15th lap in 1m40.307s, with promising signs of good tyre life from the championship leader.
Webber was signalled into the FIA bay and the RB9 has been given an intensive inspection from Jo Bauer and his team.
90 min: That's the flag on a quiet first session in Malaysia.
89 min: An early 1m40s lap for Raikkonen next time by as the Lotus impressively keeps its rubber in order despite some visible degradation.
88 min: No chance of a change in the order now, with drivers lapping on well-worn tyres while avoiding the use of a second set this morning.
87 min: Vettel is 18 laps into his stint on this set of hard tyres. He is similarly losing pace and into the mid 1m45s range.
87 min: Meanwhile, Raikkonen clocks a promising 1m39.570s lap on his 13th tour with the hard set.
86 min: Button clocks a 1m42.748s lap on his hards, but that's his eight-lap old, second set after the earlier puncture.
85 min: Hamilton pits the Mercedes after 17 laps on that set of tyres. Team-mate Rosberg's pace has slowed to 1m45s now.
85 min: Alonso has resorted to pitstop practice in his Ferrari, having damaged his set of hard tyres with that earlier lock-up.
84 min: But Rosberg is still able to keep the pace up, having completed only three laps few than his British team-mate on the same set of tyres. Rosberg breezes past Hamilton and continues on.
84 min: Early signs then of tyres giving up around the 16 lap mark, with teams hoping things will improve as rubber goes down on track.
83 min: Hamilton now reports on the team radio that 'My rear tyres are destroyed.'
82 min: Vettel's pace has dropped off to the mid 1m43s bracket, but that is between half and one second clear of the Mercedes drivers.
82 min: Raikkonen, who is testing the latest Lotus exhaust design, is back underway on his nine-lap old rubber - fresher than most after some delays
81 min: Meanwhile, Vettel reports some vibration as he works through the 16th lap on this set of hard tyres.
81 min: Down the field, van der Garde is 19th for Caterham, just quicker than Bianchi in the Marussia. Pic and Chilton are footing the order.
81 min: Hamilton appears to be losing pace over the last few laps, while Mercedes team-mate Rosberg is able to maintain his.
78 min: Little in the way of improvements on the timesheet now, with the limited available rubber now past its best.
78 min: Sutil is sixth in the Force India. He comes out for another run with just over 12 minutes to go.
75 min: Clear track for Hamilton and Rosberg, with the latter one-tenth quicker for the third tour in a row - 1m42.989s versus the Briton's 1m43.0s.
75 min: Raikkonen has remained in his car but replays of him slowing suggest it may be another reliability worry for the early championship leaders.
73 min: Hamilton hits the desired target on his next lap, posting 1m42.737s, with Rosberg registering 1m42.607s, as Mercedes works with high fuel.
72 min: Raikkonen tours slowly back into the pitlane, with the car put on trollies and pushed back into the garage.
71 min: Vettel comes through in a time of 1m41.576s as he works through a race-related run. Hamilton posts 1m43.294s, with Rosberg one-tenth quicker.
70 min: Button is now circulating in the mid 1m40s bracket as he continues a run on his puncture-enforced fresh set of tyres.
70 min: Current pacesetter Webber is back out there for another run in the Red Bull.
69 min: Hamilton is advised by his race engineer that on the current high fuel load he should be posting lap times in the 1m42s bracket.
69 min: Alonso has pitted his Ferrari after struggling with a vibration from his massive tyre-smoking halt at Turn 1.
68 min: Raikkonen comes around in a 1m37.461s on seven-lap old rubber, off his earlier best but fastest in the first sector.
68 min: Vettel heads out for another run on the same set of hard tyres, as is Rosberg.
67 min: Hamilton and Bottas are also back on track for another run.
66 min: McLaren fans will have to hope there is a lot of fuel aboard Button's car, as he should be setting faster times given his fresh rubber.
66 min: Button comes around with a new personal best of 1m38.173s on a fresh set of hard tyres, having suffered a puncture on his earlier set.
