17 min: Repairs are complete at Red Bull and Webber joins the circuit for his first run of the afternoon.

16 min: Raikkonen is demoted to third with Alonso fourth, Grosjean fifth, Button sixth and Perez in seventh spot.

16 min: Vettel is back into the pits after a run of five laps. He continues to lead the field but Rosberg goes second with 1m25.699s.

14 min: Perez is back in the pits after eight laps. The Mexican is currently sixth quickest.

13 min: Alonso completes his first timed lap and goes ninth quickest behind team-mate Massa.

12 min: Hamilton exits the garage and practices a start at the end of the pitlane, before joining the circuit.

11 min: Another small incident as Grosjean runs through the gravel at Ascari.

11 min: Vettel has backed off on his next lap. He leads the pack ahead of Raikkonen, Button and Grosjean.

11 min: Meantime, Webber is beginning to look frustrated with his helmet on watching the monitors, as he waits for the repair work to be completed.

11 min: Local hero Alonso leaves the pits in the Ferrari for his first run of the afternoon.

10 min: Romain Grosjean makes it a Lotus 1-2 on top of the times, finishing his lap just a tenth behind Raikkonen.

8 min: Rosberg and Vettel are now on the circuit. No move yet from Hamilton, or from Webber, whose car is still being worked on.

8 min: Bianchi also had a moment in the Marussia earlier when he went off entering Ascari.

7 min: Maldonado goes sixth in the early going with 1m27.469s, just ahead of team-mate Bottas.

7 min: Raikkonen saves a near spin at the first chicane as he started his third timed lap.

7 min: Di Resta pops in a time of 1m26.926s and slots in third spot.

6 min: Sutil's first lap of the weekend places him seventh with a time of 1m28.952s.

4 min: Vergne slots into an early third place with 1m28.729s.

4 min: Chilton is also the first man to completed a timed lap: 1m28.747s

3 min: Di Resta and Bottas also head onto the track for a run.

3 min: Adrian Sutil - now in the Force India replacing James Calado - heads out for his first taste of Monza this weekend.

2 min: The standard form here is for the drivers to come out and launch straight into a run of between six and eight laps.

2 min: Ricciardo takes to the circuit in the Toro Rosso.

1 min: Vergne is among the early group of drivers onto the circuit.

1 min: Max Chilton is the first driver to take to the track in the Marussia. He's followed by several cars including Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen.

0 min: The practice session is underway.

It won't be a quick start to the session for Mark Webber. His Red Bull entry is up on stands and a lot of work is being finished by the mechanics.

Track temperature has climbed to 42 degrees with a few minutes to go until the start of the session.

Weather conditions remain fine and dry at Monza, although one or two patches of cloud have developed during the break between sessions.

A light easterly breeze will result in a minor head-wind for the drivers as they head towards the Parabolica, while air temperature is up to a warm 28 degrees Celsius.

Hello everyone and welcome back to AUTOSPORT Live for continuing coverage and rolling updates from round 11 of this year's FIA Formula 1 world championship - the Italian Grand Prix from Monza.

Lewis Hamilton got his weekend off to a positive start by posting the quickest time in first practice. The Briton blasted round the 5.793km parkland circuit in 1m25.565s, edging out Ferrari's Fernando Alonso by just 0.035s. Nico Rosberg bolstered Mercedes' effort with third spot, ahead of Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Sergio Perez.

The Ferrari duo did their best to entertain the tifosi at the end of the session, as Massa locked up and sailed through a red light at the end of the pitlane, narrowly missing team-mate Alonso as he did so. The Spaniard completed his practice start and got away while the Brazilian switched off his engine, climbed out and wandered back to the garage.

But now it's down to serious business this afternoon. The teams have another 90 minutes in which to gather as much tyre data as possible, continue working on a neutral set-up for the weekend, as well as running with varying amounts of fuel.
