68 min: Rosberg is really working the yellow-ringed soft tyre down the penultimate straight, violently weaving from side to side in an effort to generate tyre temperature.
67 min: Neither Lotus driver finding pace on the supersoft tyres at the moment, though track conditions remain iffy with the occasional rain drop.
66 min: Karthikeyan is on supersoft tyres and he improves with a time of 1m20.258s, but the Indian remains in 22nd position.
65 min: Plenty of sideways action for Grosjean on his supersofts, but that's not necessarily a fast way around the track and he remains 10th.
65 min: Vettel and Webber join the party, with less than 25 minutes remaining on the clock.
64 min: @MyCaterhamF1 bracing itself for a big repair: "We'll get the chassis back after the session & then we assess the damage properly, but it looks like a busy few hours ahead for the mechanics"
63 min: Senna and Karthikeyan are also on track, as the first drivers to leave the pits get into a timed lap.
63 min: Schumacher, Maldonado, de la Rosa and Ricciardo all head out to continue with the work.
62 min: Grosjean is moving again in his Lotus, making an early switch to the supersoft Pirelli thanks to the the threat of rain.
62 min: Nico Rosberg follows the Spaniard onto the circuit.
62 min: But it's not all bad news @RedBullF1Spy: "Seb's making use of the break to get his Euro2012 fantasy football team sorted…"
62 min: Alonso is the first man out as the green flags wave.
61 min: The session has restarted.
61 min: @RedBullF1Spy is unimpressed: "Not enough that Heikki just smeared his Caterham, the marshals then dropped it on the gearbox when winching it away. Oi! That’s our gearbox!"
60 min: Race control states that the session will restart at 11:02 local time.
60 min: Vettel remains in the car, but has just finished a discussion with one of the Renault engineers, as he gives feedback on the engine performance through his first run earlier.
60 min: Race control has declared the track clear, with a restart due shortly.
59 min: While there's no action on track, here's some reading material for AUTOSPORT Plus subscribers - an assessment of Michael Schumacher's chances of becoming Formula 2012's seventh winner this weekend:
Seventh heaven for an F1 legend?
Seventh heaven for an F1 legend?
58 min: Just over 30 minutes left on the clock, which continues to count down during this interruption.
55 min: Several drivers have opted to remain in their cars. They appear somewhat eager to continue with the programme once the session restarts.
55 min: Not the most elegant recovery from the trackside crew, with the Caterham swinging violently on the rope from the telescopic handler.
53 min: Marshals are now clearing the circuit as Kovalainen is dropped off at his garage for a chat with the team.
53 min: Plenty of work for the Caterham crew to do on that car when it returns to the pits.
51 min: Kovalainen appears to be unhurt, but there is significant damage to the right front suspension of the Caterham, with the wheel hanging off.
51 min: Charles Pic is the last driver back into the pits as the recovery begins.
51 min: Replays show the Caterham drifted wide out of Turn 8, slewing around and slamming heavily into the concrete wall.
50 min: The drivers slowly pick their way through the wreckage and bits of Caterham that are scattered over the racetrack.
49 min: The session has been stopped.
49 min: Kovalainen has hit the wall in his Caterham exiting Turn 9.
49 min: Kobayashi is seventh for Sauber, but just 0.377s off Hamilton's time. Massa is eighth, Perez is ninth and Grosjean rounds out the top 10.
48 min: With just over half of the session gone, Lewis Hamilton leads the pack ahead of Vettel, Rosberg, Schumacher, Webber and Button in sixth.
47 min: A slow start to the day down at Marussia, with both drivers only now attempting to put a time on the board.
47 min: Vettel is back into the pits. He completed 12 laps on that run - one more than team-mate Webber.
46 min: Button completes his first proper effort of the session, going sixth fastest.
45 min: Vettel continues on for another lap and moves up to second spot, with a time of 1m16.143s.
45 min: But Vettel is knocked back down to fifth by Schumacher, who improves with a time of 1m16.310s.
45 min: Perez finds slight improvement on his latest attempt - now eighth fastest in his Sauber.
44 min: Vettel completes his latest lap and improves with a time of 1m16.352s. He briefly moves up the order...
43 min: Webber is back into the pits after an 11 lap run in the Red Bull. Vettel remains on track but should also be in soon.
43 min: Bruno Senna has gone straight on at Turn 3. He slowly turns onto the grass and continues without any visible signs of damage.
