Lap 39: Rosberg was 11th but di Resta rejoined from his pitstop and immediately set about the Mercedes, taking the position entering Turn 15.
Lap 39: Heidfeld pits for what Renault hope will be his final stop and he resumes in seventh.
Lap 39: Webber is right on the case of Hamilton ahead of the Red Bull's final stop. The McLarens will need to conserve rubber to make the finish.
Lap 39: Schumacher in ninth is a whopping 24.5s behind Petrov. Both have made two pitstops. Kobayashi is now 10th after that stop and eight seconds behind the Mercedes.
Lap 38: Button's stop was much better and that has handed him track position over team-mate Hamilton.
Lap 38: Button is now in for his hard tyres and resumes ahead of his team-mate.
Lap 37: That was a surprisingly early stop for Hamilton and he now has Webber on his tail.
Lap 37: Di Resta has had a horrible 1m46s lap in 10th and that's going to put Schumacher on his gearbox soon. Force India sensibly pits the Scot.
Lap 37: Hard tyres go on the McLaren after a fumble at the front but he resumes in clear air behind Massa.
Lap 37: D'Ambrosio pits from 17th and so does Kobayashi from ninth. This moves di Resta up to ninth and Schumacher to 10th.
Lap 36: Webber clocks the fastest lap at a 1m41.423s but will likely visit the pitlane again on his four-stop plan. He's 7th.
Lap 36: Hamilton has faded to 8.8s off Vettel's lead, but the Red Bull will have to take the slower hard rubber before the end.
Lap 36: Kovalainen rejoins in 16th and the remaining Lotus will try to go the distance from here.
Lap 35: Marbles continue to build up heavily off the racing line as the Pirelli tyres discard rubber with the significant degradation.
Lap 35: Kovalainen pits from 13th, releasing Alguersuari, but he is attacked and passed by Sutil heading into Turn 1. Sutil is now 13th.
Lap 35: So with Petrov up to eighth, Kobayashi is now ninth with di Resta 10th, Schumacher 11th and Rosberg 12th.
Lap 34: Trulli comes back into the pits again and this could be a permanent stay. He is wheeled into the garage for repairs.
Lap 34: Alonso is told to close the gap on the McLaren pair while Hamilton is lapping relatively slowly on his hard rubber.
Lap 33: Alguersuari, Sutil and Buemi all come into the pits. We think Alguersuari will try to make it to the end from here on just two stops.
Lap 33: Vettel sets the fastest lap at a 1m41.589s as he pulls 6.4s clear of Hamilton, who is slower on the harder tyre and under pressure from Button.
Lap 33: Webber has stopped again, taking the harder tyre and resuming ahead of Petrov.
Lap 32: Petrov caught Kobayashi and using the DRS is straight past the Sauber and into eighth at Turn 1.
Lap 32: Significant rain continues to hold off for the moment but threatening thunder cells remain on the radar all around the circuit.
Lap 32: Trulli pits from 17th position and takes on soft tyres.. He rejoins behind Glock and D'Ambrosio in 19th position.
Lap 32: Button looks quicker than Hamilton on this stint, with the lead McLaren on the harder rubber for this run.
Lap 31: Schumacher rejoined in 12th place but makes short work of Alguersuari at Turn 11. The German is now 12 seconds behind di Resta.
Lap 31: Vettel's lead is clocked at 4.4s from Hamilton after the McLaren lost a little time lapping D'Ambrosio. Button is 1.3s further behind.
Lap 30: Petrov is closing in on Kobayashi at well over one second per lap and there will be a battle for eighth place in the next couple of laps.
Lap 30: Rosberg pits this time round from 11th place, while Petrov is up to ninth and currently running fast on his new tyres.
Lap 30: The McLaren drivers are quickly being informed of Vettel's KERS problems.
Lap 29: Button has profited from that pitstop sequence to clear Alonso and is now close behind team-mate Hamilton on the road.
Lap 29: Schumacher pits for another set of tyres and drops down the order, as Perez makes it back to the pitlane on foot to report his problem to his Sauber team.
Lap 29: Vettel is told not to use KERS in his Red Bull as the team's reliability problems with the device surface once again.
Lap 29: Button is third for McLaren from Alonso, Webber, Heidfeld, Massa and Kobayashi in an action-packed Malaysian Grand Prix.
Lap 28: Hamilton is clocked 3.9s behind Vettel, with the traffic both found during the pitstop phase making little change to the gap.
Lap 28: Kobayashi makes up the ground and has a go at Schumacher. He makes it stick with a great move at Turn 2 and is up to ninth.
Lap 27: Massa pits, releasing Hamilton back into second place.
Lap 27: Kobayashi loses just a little to Schumacher on that last lap and the gap between them is around one second.
