Lap 42: Buemi pits from eighth following that small error at Turn 1.
Lap 42: Senna is also into the pits some four seconds behind Buemi. Senna takes on soft tyres and will charge after the Swiss driver.
Lap 43: Button takes the best lap as Massa makes his final stop.
Lap 43: Alguersuari pits from seventh place. He should ultimately retain that as his team-mate and Senna pitted one lap ago.
Lap 43: Di Resta is the beneficiary and he climbs to eighth as Alguersuari maintains position after that stop.
Lap 44: That last change of tyres for Massa puts him down to sixth on the road after a relatively dull afternoon from the Brazilian.
Lap 44: Di Resta crosses the line 8.2s behind Alguersuari, as they continue to run in seventh and eighth. Buemi is a further 2.9s back in ninth.
Lap 44: Hamilton again sets the fastest lap as he closes to 6.3 seconds behind Alonso.
Lap 44: Maldonado in 11th in more than nine seconds back from this battling duo and could pick up the pieces if there is any problem.
Lap 45: Buemi and Senna lap Glock's Virgin and the Brazilian is right there now. Buemi holds him off entering the Roggia chicane.
Lap 45: Hamilton continues to close on Alonso, with the gap now down to 5.4 seconds.
Lap 45: They continue into Lesmo one and Senna almost runs into the back of the ninth placed Toro Rosso.
Lap 46: Alonso responds somewhat to Hamilton's speed, with the gap pegged at 5.2 seconds as they flash over the line.
Lap 46: Senna is told over the Renault team radio that if he nails Buemi then he can catch di Resta as well in the remaining laps.
Lap 46: Buemi holds onto ninth as Perez walks back through the paddock following his exit earlier at the Curva Grande.
Lap 47: Senna is almost touching the gearbox of Buemi's STR6 as this battle continues for ninth position. Di Resta is six seconds up the road in eighth.
Lap 48: Hamilton is clocked 4.9 seconds behind Alonso and doesn't appear to have the pace to close down the Ferrari in the remaining laps.
Lap 48: Senna has another go at Buemi as they enter Turn 1 and this time he makes the move stick. Senna takes ninth and has 4.3s to make up to di Resta.
Lap 48: Senna almost outbraked himself entering Turn 1 but it worked out fine in the end. Buemi drops to 10th, with Maldonado some 12 seconds back in 11th.
Lap 50: Di Resta in eighth is advised over the team radio that Senna is coming after him, but that if he keeps the pace up he should be safe.
Lap 50: Vettel cements the fastest lap to add to his collection of dominant performance markers.
Lap 50: Senna is 5.7s back from the Scot and with less than five laps to go the Force India driver should hold on - even with Senna's advantage of option tyres.
Lap 51: Hamilton is now 2.9 seconds behind Alonso and has perhaps not given up on the chance of a podium. The pair are in heavy traffic currently.
Lap 51: No close fights on the circuit now behind the top six. Alguersuari is holding seventh nicely, with di Resta eighth and Senna ninth.
Lap 51: Buemi is 10th ahead of Maldonado 11th, Barrichello 12th and Kovalainen continues to run in 13th place with team-mate Trulli 14th.
Lap 52: Senna posts his best lap of the race so far, but 1m27.443s for the Brazilian only close the gap with di Resta down to 4.3 seconds.
Lap 52: Vettel leads by 14.1s with Button second, Alonso third and just 2.1 seconds clear of Hamilton.
Lap 53: Vettel crosses the line to start the final lap at Monza.
Lap 53: Hamilton closes the gap with the fastest lap of the race. He is just one second behind Alonso now as this fight bubbles up for third.
Lap 53: Vettel continues through Ascari and just has the Parabolica to go now ...
Hamilton is right on Alonso's tail through Ascari and may make a move in the final corner.
Another incredibly dominant performance from the runaway series leader as he moves ever closer to wrapping up his title defence.
Button grabs a fine second place for McLaren after fighting back from a poor start to take best-of-the-rest honours.
Alonso finishes a battling third to the delight of the crowd, leading off the start and doing his best with the Ferrari this afternoon.
Hamilton couldn't do anything about Alonso in the end and must be frustrated after spending much of the day trying to pass Schumacher
Schumacher finishes a creditable fifth for Mercedes, with his driving sure to come under scrutiny after several robust moves on Hamilton.
