Lap 9: Webber looks to be struggling for grip on his tyres now, with Alonso all over the Red Bull's gearbox.
Lap 9: Near the back of the field, Liuzzi has been fending off an attack from d'Ambrosio for several laps. They are fighting over 21st.
Lap 9: Hamilton is also closing the gap to Massa once again and was almost a second faster on the most recent lap.
Lap 8: Alonso has closed the gap to Webber considerably on this lap, perhaps after a mistake from the Red Bull man.
Lap 8: However, these ever-drying conditions will really challenge the tyres and could start forcing drivers into the pits fairly soon.
Lap 8: Drivers have said that these Pirelli intermediates are more durable than the former Bridgestone rubber.
Lap 7: Perez has another go at Rosberg but again the German holds him off through Luffield and into Copse.
Lap 7: The track continues to dry rapidly, but parts of the lap still look tricky on slick tyres.
Lap 7: Barrichello is now all over Petrov in a battle for 17th position.
Lap 7: Perez is also through on the Williams drivers and is up into 12th. Maldonado and Petrov are sinking down the field.
Lap 7: Meanwhile, Vettel is checking out up front with a lead of 5.4s over team-mate Webber. Alonso is a further 2.6 seconds behind in third.
Lap 7: Rosberg passes Maldonado for 11th place round the outside of Brooklands corner.
Lap 6: Massa and Hamilton set similar laptimes, with the latter struggling to regain the ground lost with that mistake at Brooklands.
Lap 6: Buemi then surges past Petrov for 15th and Alguersuari follows him through to 16th place.
Lap 6: Buemi is now up and past his team-mate Alguersuari for 16th.
Lap 6: Adrian Sutil has passed Maldonado for 10th.
Lap 5: With conditions improving, the DRS has now been been enabled by race control.
Lap 5: Perez has a go at Rosberg through Luffield for 12th but the German uses the outside 'wet' line to good effect to keep track position.
Lap 5: With wet-weather tyres already used, there is no longer a need to use both dry tyre compounds this afternoon.
Lap 5: Meanwhile, Vettel has a useful 4.1 second advantage out front, allowing him some flexibility on the call to change tyres.
Lap 5: Behind Perez, Heidfeld is 2.2s back in 14th with team-mate Petrov 15th, Alguersuari 16th, Buemi 17th and Barrichello 18th.
Lap 5: Button is still well behind the recovering Hamilton, with di Resta, Kobayashi and Schumacher chasing the McLaren.
Lap 4: Hamilton runs wide at Brooklands, but recovers over the run-off and resumes still ahead of team-mate Button.
Lap 4: Maldonado in ninth has fallen to 2.3s behind Schumacher. He is holding up Sutil in 11th, with Rosberg and Perez in close attendance.
Lap 4: The track is very dry down the Hangar straight and around the pits complex but the remainder is no where near slick conditions at the moment
Lap 3: Hamilton is all over the gearbox of Massa's Ferrari and is looking for a way through into fourth.
Lap 3: Kovalainen has pitted. It looks terminal as he is pushed into the garage.
Lap 3: Maldonado is holding up Sutil and Rosberg as a battle develops for 10th.
Lap 3: Vettel sprints off to 2.3 second early advantage from Webber, Alonso, Massa and Hamilton.
Lap 3: Barrichello had a very poor start and he's slipped down to 19th behind Kovalainen in the early stages.
Lap 3: Massa had already passed Button, who has tumbled down to sixth and is now under pressure from di Resta in the Force India.
Lap 3: Kobayashi is up to an amazing eighth with Schumacher ninth, Maldonado down to 10th, Sutil 11th, Rosberg 12th and Perez in 13th.
Lap 2: Hamilton is the man on the move at the moment as he storms past team-mate Button to take fifth.
Lap 2: Vettel flashes past the new pits for the first time with a lead of 1.1 seconds over team-mate Webber.
Lap 2: Hamilton is up to seventh and he passes di Resta into Stowe to take over sixth as they complete lap one.
Lap 1: Into the wet area of the circuit on this first lap and it is treacherous. No incidents and it is a clean start.
Lap 1: It's clean though the opening complex of corners and the cars are splashing around the very wet part of the circuit on the first lap.
Lap 1: Vettel leads from Webber, Alonso, Button and Massa as they race past the old pits for the first time.
Lap 1: Webber gets away but Vettel takes him into Turn 1. The Red Bulls remain ahead of Alonso in third.
Lap 1: The five red lights go out and we are racing at Silverstone!
