Winkelhock signs for Merc

Formula 3 graduate Markus Winkelhock, son of late Formula 1 driver Manfred and the nephew of touring car legend Joachim, has signed to drive in this year's DTM series with Mercedes-Benz

The Three-pointed Star has also announced that Formula 3000 racer Jaroslav 'Jarek' Janis and Stefan Mucke, who has raced with Mercedes in the DTM for the past two seasons, will also drive year-old CLK machinery. This means Merc has one berth remaining in its works AMG squad, which is expected to be filled by Britain's Gary Paffett.

"It makes me happy that, after two years with Mercedes Benz in Formula 3, I am graduating to the DTM, my favourite racing series," said Winkelhock. "My dream becomes a reality. The step from F3 into the DTM is certainly no easy task, because the excellent drivers in the DTM pack suggests I'll be up against very hard competition."

Mercedes Motorsport vice president Norbert Haug said: "Jarek, Markus and Stefan were noticeable to us thanks to their fine achievements. We want to continue our promotion concept for the next racing generation with this trio."

Mercedes expects to confirm its final DTM driver in the next few weeks.
