Winkelhock renews Opel deal

The former British Touring Car champion, 42, will contest his fourth DTM season in an Astra V8 Coupe. He joins Manuel Reuter, Timo Scheider, Alain Menu, Peter Dumbreck and Jeroen Bleekemolen in the squad.

"My first return to the cockpit during last week's testing in Italy gave me a very good feeling," said Winkelhock. "I was able to see for myself that the recent changes, like the new structure and the OPC Centre, as well as the expanded engineering team headed by the new technical director, Wiet Huidekoper, are effective. They're all highly motivated and pulling in the right direction. I'll do my best to ensure that we'll be able to reap the fruits with Opel in the new season."

Opel motorsport director Volker Strycek said: "We're happy to keep 'Jockel' Winkelhock on board. He's one of the best German touring car drivers and extremely popular. That's why his place is in the DTM. With Winkelhock, Reuter, Scheider, Menu, Dumbreck and Bleekemolen, we've got a strong team, being well set for the DTM."

Winkelhock is expected to drive a 2002-spec Astra alongside Bleekemolen in the Euroteam squad.
