Preview: Schneider vows to keep fighting

He might be battered and bruised from the beating he took from Audi's Laurent Aiello at the Norisring a fortnight ago, but Mercedes-Benz's reigning DTM champion Bernd Schneider says he is not giving up on this year's title

On the eve of this weekend's round at EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Schneider's mantle as the top dog of the DTM has been called into question after Aiello extended his series lead to 25 points in the wake of his last corner pass in Nuremburg. Despite this, the German is adamant that he will keep on fighting until he cannot overhaul his rival.

"As long as there is a mathematical chance, I don't think about theoretical decisions," said Schneider. "In the DTM, anything can happen. The spectators can look forward to another exciting race this weekend."

Frenchman Aiello, meanwhile, believes his Abt Sportsline Audi will be just as strong on the Lausitz road course as it was around the Norisring's Steintribune two weeks ago.

"Before the Norisring, I said that from now on I didn't have to win every race anymore," said Aiello. "But after the great fight with Bernd Schneider, I noticed once again that winning can be really addictive. I am looking forward to the EuroSpeedway. Our car should work well there."

Opel is also expected to be in a fighting mood after a dismal weekend at Norisring, and its drivers are also hungry for success.

"The track is also quite demanding, as there are some fast corners, in which the men are separated from the boys," said Winkelhock. "An aggressive driving style won't get you anywhere on this track, that's why I'm going to approach this race with a great deal of composure."
