Practice 2: Schneider gets on it

The two biggest names in the DTM duked it out in the second free practice session at Zandvoort in Holland for the penultimate round of the championship, but it was AMG Mercedes star Bernd Schneider who set the pace over series leader Laurent Aiello

Schneider lapped his Merc CLK in 1m36.778s, a tenth quicker than Aiello's Abt Sportsline Audi TT. Aiello needs seven points this weekend to make the title safe, but even if he wins every point on offer, Schneider must outscore his rival by seven to take the title down to the wire.

Second string AMG drivers Marcel Fassler and Uwe Alzen were best of the rest, ahead of the Audis of last year's pole sitter Christian Abt and Mattias Ekstrom.

Former F1 star Jean Alesi was seventh quickest, ahead of Martin Tomczyk (Audi) and the first Opel of Alain Menu. After their impressive display this morning, the Opel posse fell back to the lower reaches of the top 10.

Opel returnee Eric Helary was 17th fastest, while Britain's Peter Dumbreck was a lowly 19th in his year-old Mercedes.
