Opel tests potential drivers

Opel put four potential candidates for a 2003 DTM drive through their paces in an Astra V8 Coupe at the Spanish Albacete track on Tuesday

Former Sauber Formula 1 driver Norberto Fontana was joined by Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen, Emanuel Collard and Opel junior works F3 driver Timo Glock, in the first of the marque's assessment days at its Performance Centre.

"In Albacete, and maybe also at another occasion, we want to give some drivers the chance to drive our DTM car and also get an impression about their performance," said Opel motorsport director Volker Strycek. "This, however, does not mean that any of these drivers will necessarily be racing in the DTM for us next year."

Regular drivers Timo Scheider and Manuel Reuter, who are expected to be confirmed for next year soon, were on hand to help set up the Team Holzer car and provide a benchmark figure for the four to aim at. Although no times were released, the day was judged a success.

"All four drivers took on their task in a very professional way, they quickly were setting fast lap times and, together with the engineers involved, they analysed the different changes on the car in a sensible way," said Dr. Ulrich Pfisterer, head of the DTM project at the Opel Performance Center.
