DTM Oschersleben test: Champion Marco Wittmann quickest for BMW

Reigning DTM champion Marco Wittmann led the way as BMW dominated the opening day of the final pre-season test at Oschersleben

Wittmann topped both the morning and afternoon running, as the four BMWs all finished the day inside the top five.

Having set a 1m20.059s in the first session, Wittmann improved to a 1m19.913s after lunch, the only driver to lap under the 1m20s bracket.

Timo Glock was only 10th of the 12 runners in the morning, but he set the second-fastest time of the afternoon, a 1m20.142s.

That put Glock third for the day, while Antonio Felix da Costa and Tom Blomqvist were fourth and fifth.

Mercedes driver Robert Wickens prevented a BMW sweep of the top four places.

The Canadian was second in the morning to Wittmann with a 1m20.133s, and he maintained that position despite setting the sixth-fastest time of the afternoon.

Fellow Mercedes drivers Gary Paffett and Christian Vietoris - winner of the 2014 race at Oschersleben - were sixth and seventh.

That meant the top Audi was Estoril testing pacesetter Nico Muller in eighth.

Mattias Ekstrom and Timo Scheider, who led the day's lap count with 172, rounded out the top 10, while Edoardo Mortara was limited to just 29 and ended the day at the foot of the timesheets.

Maximilian Gotz, the busiest driver of the morning turning 93 laps, only added one to his tally in the afternoon, just before the chequered flag, having been sidelined with a mechanical problem.

Testing continues on Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of the season opener at Hockenheim on May 1-3.
