Clampdown on apes at Tarzan

After the first corner pile-up in the DTM race at the A1-Ring in Austria two weeks ago, plans are in place for this weekend's Zandvoort round of the DTM to avoid a similar scenario happening again

Overtaking will be banned at the infamous Tarzan hairpin on the opening lap of both the qualification and main race events. Only 10 cars finished the A1-Ring race, mainly due to the opening lap chaos sparked by former BTCC champions Alain Menu and Laurent Aiello, who collided with Uwe Alzen.

A combination of cameras and sensors will be used to see that fair play is observed, but Scotland's Peter Dumbreck, who lost second place in the championship due to being punted out in Austria, says it will be difficult to enforce the no overtaking rule at Zandvoort's first turn.

"It's going to be pretty tricky," he said. "It's a good idea, a shame they didn't think of it for Austria, but if we arrive two abreast in the turn it will be difficult to police. If you brake on the racing line, then the other guy will be on the dirt and will have to brake earlier, so I think it will be difficult to police and to actually judge if someone gained a place fairly or not."

Like many others, Dumbreck is annoyed with the level of contact between cars in the second half of this season, and thinks firmer action against perpetrators should be taken.

"My opinion is that they should come down harder on drivers," he said. "Menu, for example, was very optimistic at the A1-Ring and it resulted in a big pile-up. We've all been talked to and told off, but no one has been given any real penalties, so they keep doing it."

The DTM is visiting Holland for the first time this weekend, and a huge crowd is expected at the seaside venue near Amsterdam.
