Big stars struggle in qualifying

Three of the DTM's biggest stars - series leader Laurent Aiello, reigning champion Bernd Schneider and Uwe Alzen - will start Sunday's qualification race from the tail-end of the field after each suffered a disastrous qualifying session

Mercedes pairing Schneider (16th) and Alzen (18th) will sandwich Aiello (17th) on the grid tomorrow after falling foul of the tricky wet qualifying conditions.

"In these conditions there are always winners and losers," said Schneider. "Today, I got it wrong. We thought it should have been possible to achieve a good time on slick tyres, but every time I went out I was just a bit too late and it had started to drizzle."

Alzen was mystified to be 1.8secs off the fastest time: "I don't know what happened. Maybe I could have achieved a 1m40.3s, but I'm sure a time under 1m40 was not possible for me today. We hope to be better prepared for tomorrow."

Aiello's team boss Hans-Jurgen Abt had little sympathy for his French charge: "He was off the track on his fastest lap, maybe he wanted to stop and collect some of that nice green grass! The potential of the car was good today, but in a qualifying session like this you need some luck."
