Audi confirms works return
Audi has confirmed that it will officially return to the DTM series fielding manufacturer-backed entries next year, and its crack sportscar outfit Joest will run two of its new A4 touring cars. Sportscar stars Tom Kristensen, Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro will join its driving strength
Audi will back a total of six newly developed touring cars based on its A4 model. The Abt Sportsline team, which has run Audi's DTM programme as a privateer thus far, has been granted works status and will run four cars. Joest Racing will run a further two.
"The DTM has developed really very strongly since its comeback four years ago," said head of Audi Sport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "Through Abt Sportsline, Audi was represented from the very beginning of the new DTM. With our works involvement we now make a logical step. The German market is extremely important for us and the DTM is a perfect European wide platform."
Abt will continue to run Christian Abt, Mattias Ekstrom and former Audi junior Martin Tomczyk. Its fourth entry will be for Audi's sportscar superstar Tom Kristensen.
Joest will run former DTM champion Frank Biela and former F1 racer Emanuele Pirro.
