Martin Tomczyk: Only DTM title will suffice in 2013
Martin Tomczyk says that regaining his title is his one and only goal for next year's DTM
The 30-year-old German became champion for Audi in 2011 before moving across to BMW's revived DTM operation for this year.
But despite a strong mid-season run of three podium finishes in as many races, Tomczyk's season was a frustrating one as he became involved in a series of collisions towards the end of the year and finished eighth in the standings.
He believes that fellow BMW man Bruno Spengler's title success this year is all the inspiration he needs to add to his own crown in 2013.
"My goal is very clear," said Tomczyk. "I want to get the #1 back on my car.
"BMW Team RMG learned a lot this season, but now we must regroup over the winter and put what we learned into practice as we prepare for 2013.
"This way we can ensure that we line up at the first race of the new season in top form."
Tomczyk said that the level of effort put into developing the BMW M3 was unprecedented in his experience, and believes he had to raise his own game during the year.
"I, personally, have never worked so hard to develop a car during the winter prior to a season as I did ahead of BMW's comeback in 2012," he added.
"Up until the race at the Norisring, everything was going very well for me. I was on the podium three races in succession and was in touch with the leaders in the drivers' championship.
"Unfortunately, however, I was then struck by something that just happens sometimes in motorsport: I was really unlucky in the second half of the season and failed to finish four times in a row.
"That obviously dashed any hopes of defending my title."
