Thompson tests Tempus Chevrolet

British Touring Car Championship newcomers Tempus Sport have admitted they want to sign James Thompson after the two-time champion tested one of their 2008-spec Chevrolet Lacettis at Estoril in Portugal

Thompson drove the Lacetti for one day in Portugal, although his running, as well as that of the already signed Harry Vaulkhard, was limited by poor weather.

Tempus team boss Richard Coleman made no secret of his desire to sign him, despite admitting that he is still in talks with more than one other driver in a bid to find a teammate for Vaulkhard.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to get a driver of the calibre of James Thompson in the car and his feedback was invaluable," said Coleman.

"A driver like James would fit in perfectly at Tempus Sport and I think he understands exactly what we are trying to achieve. We are certainly having serious discussions with James, but we are still talking to other drivers too, so it's too early to confirm our second driver."

Thompson, who was released a year into a three-year World Touring Car Championship contract with N.Technology after the team had to can their Honda project in December, has yet to make a decision on where to race this year. And, despite enjoying his run in the Lacetti, he is refusing to commit to anybody just yet.

"I have raced against the Chevrolet Lacetti at tracks around the world over the last four seasons so I've seen how it has developed and I know what it's capable of doing," said Thompson.

"Getting behind the wheel of the car for myself was interesting and the Tempus Sport team certainly have potential, especially with their close relationship with RML, who make the car.

It's still too early to say what I'll be doing for the 2009 season, but the BTCC with Tempus is definitely an option."
