Silverstone loses BTCC date
Talks between British Touring Car Championship bosses and Silverstone about a race-date for next season have collapsed, meaning the Northamptonshire circuit will be absent from the 2007 calendar
Silverstone had been offered an April 22 date for next season, but was reluctant to accept it because of clashes with other heavily promoted events. A round of the British Superbike Championship was scheduled for a week later, with the FIA GT round a week after that.
With a compromise not being found, the BTCC have signed a deal with Rockingham instead. The series last visited the track in 2003.
BTCC boss Alan Gow said: "We are delighted to be able to return to Rockingham. Its unique track layout, up-to-date facilities and terrific viewing areas for the spectators all proved a great hit with the drivers, teams, spectators and sponsors when we raced there in 2003.
"In fact, a great many of our fans have constantly been asking me to take the BTCC back to Rockingham, so this is also for them. I'm sure it will receive great support and prove to be warmly welcomed back on our schedule.
"Rockingham's inclusion also means that the BTCC will continue to be in action in eight counties, ensuring that the championship remains as accessible as possible for the public in all four corners of the UK."
