Reid christens new endorsement system
Ford star Anthony Reid has become the first to be subjected to a new system of licence penalty points in the British Touring Car Championship. The revised endorsement regulations mean that drivers committing offences will tot up points on their licence up to a maximum of 12, similar to a road-traffic violation
Cases of reckless or careless driving could carry a three or four-point penalty. Missing a drivers' briefing is likely to be worth only one. Previously, a competitor was allowed three transgressions - whatever their gravity - before having his licence reviewed by the RACMSA, British motorsport's governing body.
Reid was given a two-point penalty after punting ex-Nissan team mate David Leslie off the road at the McLeans right-hander. Reid explained, 'It was apparent that David's pace had dropped, but it was an erratic loss of speed and I thought he was letting me through. He left the door open but suddenly cut back in.'
Leslie stormed, 'Doing what Anthony did is definitely taboo.'
Reid's new team mate, Alain Menu, gave the thumbs up to the new licence rules. He was under threat of losing his licence last year, even though one of his endorsements was for missing a chicane. 'It's a good idea,' he said. 'The only grey area is how they decide the points, but it's progress.'
