Onslow-Cole adds race two win
Tom Onslow-Cole made it two wins out of two in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Thruxton, taking advantage of a puncture for long-time leader Fabrizio Giovanardi on the final lap to snatch victory
The 21-year-old Briton's result, the third win of his career, moved him up to second in the championship, 14 points behind Giovanardi, who crawled over the line in tenth place.
At the start polesitter Onslow-Cole bogged down and dropped to fifth as Colin Turkington made the best start to take his Team RAC BMW into the lead from the outside of the front row followed by Giovanardi, Darren Turner, Matt Neal and Mat Jackson.
Neal and Jackson got together at the Complex on the first lap, allowing Onslow-Cole back up to fourth, which became second when Turkington and Neal both went onto the grass on the outside at Allard on lap 17 of 19, and then the lead when Giovanardi had his tyre go down.
Giovanardi had taken the lead from Turkington on lap seven - the second flying lap after the safety car, which was brought out to allow Martyn Bell's Arkas Vauxhall to be extracted from the tyres at Seagrave.
The Italian got alongside Turkington on the outside on the drag up to the chicane and then got in front on turn-in. Turkington though, began to slide as he covered the inside line, tapping the Vauxhall and causing both to cut the chicane as a result.
He later dropped behind Onslow-Cole at the same corner on lap 17 after a few laps in which he appeared to be struggling for rear-end grip, but held off the charging Neal, despite a tap at Cobb from the two-time champion on the final lap.
Turner, who had a few good attempts to wrest Neal's third place in the final few laps, finished fourth ahead of the BMW Dealer UK entry of Jackson, Adam Jones' Team Air-Cool SEAT and Jason Plato, who carved through the field from 24th on the grid to finish eighth for SEAT after his race one exclusion.
Ninth went to Eurotech-John Guest Honda driver Andrew Jordan, who was spun by Stephen Jelley at Cobb on the opening lap but managed to climb throughout the race and will start the final event of the day from pole position after Onslow-Cole pulled out his number for the reverse-grid race.
