Chilton Wins Race 3 at Oulton

Tom Chilton benefitted from mistakes by his rivals to take a surprise victory in the third British Touring Car Championship race at Oulton Park on Sunday

The youngster kept his head in the wet conditions that greeted the drivers for the final race of the day to take his third career victory, ahead of championship leader Matt Neal and Jason Plato.

The race had looked to be going Plato's way as he stormed away from pole position but the SEAT driver got it all wrong at the hairpin on the first lap and ran straight on - dropping well down the order.

That incident left Rob Collard in the lead, ahead of Chilton, Dan Eaves and Matt Neal - while further down the field Yvan Muller's championship chances took a major dent after he was forced out with broken rear suspension after a clash with Richard Williams' Lexus.

As Muller pulled into the pits at the end of lap one, the Safety Car was called out after the Vauxhall of Colin Turkington was left beached in the gravel at Lodge corner following a collision with teammate Gavin Smith.

The Safety Car stayed out until the end of lap eight and at the restart Collard found himself under intense pressure from Chilton, as behind them Neal found a way past Eaves.

On lap 10, Chilton's pressure finally paid off as Collard ran wide at the hairpin and then went straight on at the chicane to drop to second, just ahead of Neal.

As Collard drove defensively, Chilton roared away to open up a comfortable gap at the front of the field. By the time Neal had found a way past Collard on lap 12, it was too late for him to do anything about the leading Honda, and he finished 2.7 seconds behind.

Plato recovered from his first lap mistake to take third place, having benefited from Eaves running straight on at the chicane on lap 14 and then finding a way past eventual fourth placed finisher Collard inside Lodge on lap 15.

Full result will follow shortly...
